Introduction to Instrumentation Design Engineering

This article is for providing a brief introduction to Instrumentation Design Engineering.

About:

Design engineering is an area of Instrumentation engineering field which deals with design activities of all the field instruments & equipments, along with all the necessary, related & relevant documentation/deliverables of these instruments/equipments, for all the process oriented industries like Chemical plants, Fertilizer plants, Refineries, Pharmaceutical companies, Food industries, Paper & pulp industry, Water industry, Waste & recycling plants, Steel industries, Cement industries and all the other manufacturing units along with storage & handling facilities too . Design engineering activities clearly focus on the all the primary & essential parameters of designing criteria i.e.  Application concept study, design basis study in conjunction with detail engineering activities like safety study, hazard study, sizing & calculations, selection, evaluation and at last, the execution; together all these comprise the design phase of the project.

Design & Detail Engineering Documents/Deliverables:

The below listed documents are the majorly global documents in common prepared in accordance to project execution & requirements. Not all the below listed documents are prepared in each project as it basically governs depending on the nature and scope of the project.

  1. Piping & instrumentation drawing (P&ID)
  2. Bill of material (BOM)
  3. Instrument Index / Instrument list / Instrument BOM
  4. Instrument datasheets/specification sheets
  5. Hook-up drawing & BOM
  6. Cable tray layout & BOM
  7. Instrument Air consumption list
  8. Instrument Air header schedule
  9. Electrical load consumption list
  10. Cable schedule
  11. Junction box General Arrangement drawing (GA).
  12. Junction box (JB) schedule
  13. Instrument location plan/layout.
  14. Input/output (I/O) & alarm list.
  15. System architecture & specifications.
  16. Control logics & philosophy/narratives
  17. Panel GA drawing & BOM.
  18. Panel Wiring drawing
  19. Panel schedule
  20. Instruments Loop wiring drawing
  21. Factory acceptance test (FAT) procedure/report
  22. Site acceptance test (SAT) procedure/report

Purpose:

All the above listed documents are design stages/activities contributing towards the instrumentation scope of any project. As earlier discussed above, the nature and scope of project decides the requirement & necessity of above listed documents accordingly. The nature & scope of project mainly gets driven by below broadly main classified points:

Nature wise:

  • Green field projects i.e. from concept to commissioning.
  • Brown field projects like Upgradation, Expansion, integration, etc.

Scope wise:

  • Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) scope i.e. Field instrumentation.
  • Control system scope i.e. PLC, DCS, and SCADA part
  • Complete scope including both Field Instrumentation & Control system Instrumentation.
