Biomedical instrumentation is a branch of medical science that deals with an approach of accurate & precise measurements with necessary observations & readings being recorded, based on which accurate treatments and health improvement measures are provided. This branch of instrumentation is totally limited to laboratories, hospitals, medical centers and commercial applications. No process field oriented approach can be found in this branch.
In our day to day life, when we come across to a hospital environment, we can see many instruments being used by the hospital staff and operating personnel. All these instruments are supposed to be regularly checked, maintained & calibrated as well, as all are dealing with human health care aspects directly. For this reason, accuracy and precision of these instruments play an important role in health care sector.
Many instruments which we use for our process applications, same instruments are even used for medical applications. With certain modifications done in terms of mechanical design of the overall instrument size and its setup, and working principle being the same, the instruments are then made ready for medical usage. In this way, some instruments like, pH analyser for blood pH measurement, electromagnetic flow meter for blood flow measurement in veins, pressure transducer for body pressure readings, temperature transducer for monitoring body temperature are used very commonly. Some of the other popular & commonly seen instruments which are broadly demonstrating this branch are Oximeters for measuring body oxygen level, X-ray machines and Ultrasound machines for internal body structural imaging aspects, Defibrillators for countering fibrillation, Ventilators for breathing problems, and Pacemakers for giving external pulses.
Biomedical instrumentation has been advanced in last 20 years to a next optimum level. Many developments have been occurred in process instrumentation oriented sectors but the vast & dynamic development happened in biomedical field is non-comparable as any development towards health and safety of mankind is actually to be termed as development as all these instruments are eventually helping to aid human beings in a very ease & comfort manner, because all the complications and complexities of instruments has been already reduced by the technology now.
